Civil War Military File for Bryant Flanagan
Co. G, 18th Missouri Infantry, USA
killed in action, at Pittsburg Landing (Shiloh) Tennessee

NOTE: I will be adding images and updating this page as soon as I have an opportunity. I received Bryant's pension file and it provides proof that this was John and Ruth's son. I have also learned that Lloyd Flanagan, Bryant's brother served with the 3rd Iowa Cavalry (Union) and is buried in St. Louis. I have requested his files as well and am trying to track down Charles.
The images linked to on this page are from the military file of Bryant Flanagan, a private who served in Co. G of the 18th Missouri Infantry, USA and who was killed in action April 6, 1862 at Pittsburg Landing during the Battle of Shiloh, Tennessee. This Bryant was the son of John and Ruth (Triplett) Flanagan who moved from Russell County, Kentucky to Missouri in 1845 with their children, including Bryant. Goodspeed's History of Benton, Washington, Carroll, Madison, Crawford, Franklin, and Sebastian Counties, Arkansas states that John and Ruth's son, along with his brothers Charles and Lloyd died in the prison at Alton, Illinois; however, that is erroneous. The prison was a state facility before the Civil War, but the death dates I have seen for Bryant are after 1860 when it was a federal prison for Confederate POWs. None of the three Flanagan brothers are listed among the dead in the database at the Alton prison website. I have obtained Bryant's pension file and will be adding them as time permits to this page which lists his widow and sons proving that he died at Shiloh. I have also obtained the service file for Lloyd Flanagan, which also shows service to the Union in the 3rd Iowa Cavalry; Lloyd died of illness at the U.S. Marine Hospital in St. Louis and is buried in the national cemetery there.
